A new online tool quantifies and visualizes the reality of global flood risk. The analyzer estimates current and future potential exposed GDO, affected population and urban damage from river floods for every state, country and major river basin in the world. The tool ranked 164 countries by the number of people affected by river flooding and found that the top 15 countries account for nearly 80% of the total population affected each year.
The top 15 countries with the greatest population exposed to river flood risk are either least developed or developing countries, which are the most vulnerable to natural disasters and climate change. Roughly 167,000 people in the U.S., the highest-ranked high-income country, are affected every year.
