The annual IndustryWeek 50 Best U.S. Manufacturers ranks the best-performing U.S. public manufacturing companies. It also looks at financial performance across several different indicators to uncover the strongest companies. These include a profit margin, sales turnover and return on assets, among other metrics.
The most recent year (2017) accounts for 50% of the calculation, while 2016 is weighted at 30% and 2015 contributes 20%. It includes the full ranking of this year's class sortable by rank, company name, industry, and several financial measures. Apple is clearly in a class of its own with net income approaching $50B last year.
The tech sector isn’t the only manufacturing sector with revenue exceeding $100B. Petroleum and coal companies remain massively profitable. Auto manufacturers likewise crack the $100B mark, but GM deserves special mention for its negative profit margin of -2.65%, one of only five companies in our visual that’s actually losing money.
