Trussell Trust foodbanks - including Newcastle's West End Foodbank, which is Britain's busiest and was recently visited by a UN expert on extreme poverty - gave out a combined 160,000 three-day emergency food supplies in December 2017, a 49% increase for the monthly average for 2017/18.
It runs more than 400 foodbanks expects December to be its busiest ever month. The figure was 10% up on December 2016, said the Trust, adding that use of food banks has been increasing this year. "Christmas is supposed to be a time for joy but what we're seeing is the festive period becoming increasingly stressful for more and more people across the country, says The Trust's chief executive Emma Revie.
